Tea Ingredient Shelf Life & Storage: A Store Operations Manual
The core principle of storing tea ingredients: FIFO (first in, first out) + label every opened pack with its date + keep temperature and humidity under control.
Storage requirements by ingredient type
| Ingredient | Storage conditions | Shelf life | Once opened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tea leaves | Sealed, away from light, below 20°C | 12–24 months | Use within 3 months, kept sealed |
| Non-dairy creamer | Dry, cool, moisture-proof | 12 months | Within 1 month, kept sealed |
| Jams / syrups | Cool, away from light | 12–24 months | Refrigerated, within 7–15 days |
| Tapioca pearls / toppings | Dry and sealed | 6–12 months | Cook fresh; never keep overnight |
| Fresh milk / rich milk base | Refrigerated 0–4°C | 7–15 days | Within 48 hours of opening |
Five actions to put in place
- Label the goods-in date as soon as stock arrives, and store FIFO — new stock at the back, older stock at the front.
- Label every opened pack with both the opening date and the expiry date.
- Run a weekly date check; anything within 30 days of expiry gets used first or pulled from sale.
- Keep a warehouse temperature log — keep tea and jam storage out of direct sunlight, and air-condition or dehumidify hot zones in summer.
- Ask your supplier for the storage-condition documentation and follow it.
Red line: expired jams, off-smelling creamer and clumped toppings must be scrapped — ingredients account for 25–35% of your costs, and one food-safety incident costs far more than the write-off.
