Online vs Wholesale Market: Sourcing Choices
| Dimension | Online platforms (1688 and similar) | Offline wholesale markets |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Low (source factories list directly on the platform) | Medium (stall rent is built in) |
| Lead time | 2-5 days by logistics | Same-day pickup |
| Returns | Process-driven, but slow | Negotiated on the spot |
| Payment terms | Platform escrow | Regulars can buy on credit |
| Trying new products | Wait for the shipment | Inspect samples and buy on the spot |
Combined strategy
Buy regular ingredients online — prices are lower and the line back to the source is shorter — and use the offline market for emergency restocking and for trialling new products on the spot, where you can take goods the same day and inspect samples in person. Two cautions matter. Online, always buy from a flagship store or a verified supplier and check the licences. Offline, do not chase the cheapest unbranded bulk goods: ingredients with no SC food-production marking carry a very high food-safety risk.
Going one step further
Once your volume grows, the online channel can be upgraded to direct factory supply, skipping the platform and taking the price down another level.
